Keep trying. This happened to me recently but and a few hours before the flight, I was able to get a seat. The weather was bad so I checked on the status of the flight right before I left for the airport - checked again for seats and was able to check in. I really lucked out because I was able to snag an exit row seat - since it was a transcon, I was not looking forward to sitting in one of the leftovers.
