Would be interesting to know how many int'l. BF requests that they have vs. how many they actually honor.

While I'm not privy to any statistics, I'm guessing that its long been in the 0.0... range.

Every request they get to use/cash in miles is a "redemption" - order a 10,000 domestic mileage upgrade - you had a redemption. Order an upgrade to BF, you redeemed miles baby, even if you sit in coach. Use miles to order a magazine subscription or donate to charity, redeeeem city.

It's a gague of how many times people used their miles, nothing more. It has no refelection upon how many times people were able (vs not able) to get a desired seat/upgrade, or any other success ratio.

It's not a negative thing, it's just irrelevant.
