Airlines should quite simply quote the price that you have to put down on the counter for their product, just like anyone else. How they calculate it is incidental. Look at petrol (gasoline to those from the US). Currently about 85p a litre here. But wouldn't it be ridiculous if it was quoted at say 15p a litre (the actual price before two taxes, VAT and road fuel duty), and the pump counted up 50 litres as £7.50 in front of you, then when you went to pay you were asked for £42.50.
