One possible problem is that sometimes the airline changes the plane for a flight and thus the seating arrangement. I have booked flights with my wife, arranged the seats together, and later found out that we were separated. I had to fight a little to put us back together. That would really ruin your husband's plan if they separated him from his extra seat! Ask first if there is any sure way to avoid this.
