Very interesting indeed. My experience at LHR (as indicated above) is precisely the opposite. In fact, staff have been very emphatic when insisting that only VIPs, not miles, can be used on day of travel.

For me, this all came to a head when the co-pay was announced and it suddenly made sense for me to save VIPs and burn miles before it came into effect.
