Seats 1A&K on a 747 are usually available for pre-assignment to BAEC Gold members well before the flight. If you are keen to sit there, perhaps you can call BA and have a request passed onto seating control.
As for the closest issue, that's never been a problem with me as it is usually accessed before take-off and during preparations for landing - rarely during the flight - usually by me hanging my clothes after changing into the PJs.
