Taipei, May 21 (CNA) A set of ground radar is expected to be inaugurated at CKS International Airport at the end of this year to provide maximum security on the airport ground, the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) said Saturday. CAA officials said that the installation of the ground radar will upgrade the monitoring capacity of the airport traffic control tower on the movement of airplanes and vehicles on the tarmac so as to ensure their safety. Installation of the set of ground radar, with an estimated price tag of NT$200 million (US$6.34 million), began in the latter part of 2004 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The CAA decided to install ground radar at CKS International Airport after criticism that a lack of ground radar had hampered air traffic controllers from alerting the pilot of a Singapore Airlines jumbo jet when he was attempting to take off from the wrong runway during stormy weather on Oct. 31, 2000. The doomed plane crashed and burst into flames after hitting construction equipment on the runway, which was under repair at the time. Some 83 passengers died in the accident.
