If she is really interested in becoming a party leader, as a columnist on Globe and Mail points out, she would have stayed in the Conservatives and wait till Harper falls yet again. Coming to the Liberals would be difficult because there are so many people waiting in line to become the next PM. As surprised as it may sounds, money can't buy everything - there is a point of diminished returns.
I would add that as a recent conservative who moved across, she might have some trouble convincing hard core liberals. So, I am inclined to agree with you on the leadership thing. Her chances would have been better in a post-Harper reform (oops, "conservative").
Assuming Harper would not have won in a spring election that is. Which I think he would not have. Who knows what her view was on that though?
