To respond specifically to CozumelJen's IAH monorail situation, if this was on the above-ground monorail between terminals B and C, perhaps here's an explanation:

You may not be aware of this, but the monorail has only 2 stops. So, regardless of which stop you get on at, there's only one place to get off: the other stop. Obviously, the FA's know this, and they may just assume that it's obvious to everyone else. In this context, a question "are you getting off" is naturally going to be interpreted as a sarcastic question. It probably didn't occur to them that you weren't aware that there was only one place to get off. Not that this makes it right, but perhaps this provides an explanation.
