I just called Starwood to enroll in the promotion that gives 1250 Frecuenta miles for the first stay at a Starwood property (promo code "VQ").

First, the phone number listed on the Mexicana web site is wrong for US customers. The correct number is 888-625-4988 (the Mexicana site lists it as an 800 number).

Secondly, the automated system for taking the promo codes could not record the name of the airline (Mexicana), so I had to call Starwood (at the same number) and talk to a human. I have not stayed at a Starwood property this year and only signed up for the "Preferred Guest" card a few days ago. The first thing the operator said after I gave my Starwood number is "OK, I see we can upgrade you to Gold status." I don't know if this is really anything special with Starwood, but what the heck...I'll take it.
