A couple of months ago on the ZRH-IAD run I intended to upgrade at the gate Y>C and was refused. The reason given by the gate agent: "We do not have extra meals and the crew does not want upgrades in this case."

Note sure if this holds true (?), as this agent was having a bad day due to other issues immediately before dept. First time I encountered this in years of flying/upgrading on UA.
