Short answer -- this ticket was purchased using a corporate credit card I that don't have, so I couldn't repurchase it myself. The folks who booked the ticket were unwilling to mess with it for me. An airline ticketing agent can refund and repurchase even if I don't have the card, but I can't do it myself. (I hope that all makes sense).
