The A airport shuttle is outside security on the arrival level. Apparently there is an airside shuttle (see rjque's post above). (If your AS flight is from Mexico then you will arrive in the International Terminal for processing, otherwise you will arrive T3).

If you decide to walk... Make a beeline out the upper level T3 exit, turn right, walk in front of the international terminal and then back into T4. You can even walk through the parking garage, but I don't recommend it (dark/filled with fumes). T4 can have a long line and the checkpoint lines are confusing, but this is where you will need to end up. If you are AA elite, then you may want to ask how to get to the elite entrance. It is easy to miss.
