Just logged in & discovered I hadn't been on FlyerTalk since November! Talk about a layover ...

Our annual pilgrimage to Hawai'i is coming up in August/September: a week on Kaua'i (our first visit there), a week on the Big Island and returning to the mainland on Labor Day weekend. In the past, we've taken AA's late night on Saturday but this trip, we'll overnight on Oahu and use the Sunday 6:30pm departure to DFW.

So: we will rent a car again & probably try to see a bit of the North Shore and have a few hours at Kailua. I'd love to indulge myself by operating the amateur radio station aboard Missouri, but that may get vetoed by my wife ...

Anyhow, as much as we'd like to stay at the Royal Hawaiian, the prices were pretty steep last time we checked. Since time really isn't an issue, how about suggestions for clean, reasonably-priced hotels away from Waikiki?
