As a state employee, I definitely will not dispute that money is often wasted, just as it is in many corporations (I also understand why people have more of a problem with the government wasting money since people don't have a choice about paying taxes.).
That said, I don't disagree with the renaming - I disagree with its implementation. BWI has been under construction now for about five years. About a year or two ago, the airport renamed its parking lots and introduced new signage. That would have been an appropriate time to rename the airport as the signs were being replaced anyway. Much of the terminal construction has already been completed - Concourse A opens in two days. So now that we've finished putting up new signs all over the airport, let's spend even more money to change those signs. The timing of this defies common sense.
It's not just signs either. The $2 million figure is just an estimate. I'm sure the final figure will be much higher. Signs aren't cheap and there's much more that's affected by the change. New letterhead will need to be printed, new brochures and all other publications the airport distributes. New uniforms are also necessary. And don't forget the additional marketing and advertising needed so that people aren't confused (and they easily are...).
Plenty of these things can wait - new uniforms when they would normally be replaced, new letterhead when the old supply runs out, etc., but we'll have to wait and see.
