If your oncarriage (onward journey) is all on one ticket then the bag can be checked through, even though you are using another airline that is not in one world. If you are using two separate tickets for each journey (e.g BA FCO-MAN then BD MAN-IAD two separatly bought tickets) then no you would not be able to.

The only other time would be when you had two tickets and the other airline was a one world airline
