I don't know about that... I have far less trouble upgrading on NW. CO quite often does not allow me to upgrade before check-in, even when FC is almost empty. (I see quite a few flights on ITN showing A9 F0.) With NW, I am usually upgraded automatically at midnight the day before departure, the usual timing for Silver Elites.
