I was scheduled to attend a conference in Los Angeles but all seats on SQ20 had been sold out. The travel agent asked if I had a KF membership, coz it "might help". I submitted the number of my newly-registered membership -- note that I had ZERO miles accured then. The next thing I knew, I was sitting comfortably on SQ20.

OK -- I joined Kris Flyer and called them to give them the number. The agent insisted that I had higher priority on the wait list with my United 1K Star Gold number. Who should I believe?
