I'm not and haven't for a long time been a Simon and/or Garfunkel fan, but I've NEVER called it the Queensboro bridge and don't think I know anyone who does! As to whether it's worth it, I think it depends, in part on the time of day. For instance, coming back to the city on Sunday night, when traffic tends to be heavy, I generally take the tunnel; early Sunday morning, on the other hand, I take the bridge. If you're in doubt and you see a long line of cars getting off the LIE at Van Dam, you might want to stay on for the tunnel.
