I paid Priceline with my credit card. By proving to the credit card insurance carrier that I paid with my Amex card for the rental in question they covered the rental. If I had paid the rental car company directly with Amex, my claim would have been processed more quickly because the car rental company would have verified the credit card used for payment.
You should certainly ask DC's carrier directly what they cover- their coverage may not be the same. I'm just telling you my actual experience instead of speculation or theory.
I understand that at least with opaque hotel bookings, PLN uses its own MC to purchase, regardless of what you used to purchase online.
However, did you purchase this car rental -- if you can, I have no idea -- thru PLN's booking engine that permits you to see just what you are buying and from whom?
If the latter, I can see how you would have an argument that you puchased a specific package with an AMEX.
Onthe other hand, if you purchased that car rental via opaque booking on PLN, then unless they have different rules for opaque room purchases and those that involve car rentals, I still consider you very lucky indeed, as the AMEX person could have just as easily said that it was PLN that purchased the car rental on your behalf, and that you were subject to whatever method of payment they rendered to the car rental agency.
Despite your good fortune, I would prefer to err on the side of caution and not risk personal financial ruin by not being covered for CDW and moer importantly, liability if someone is injured. It just ain't worth it.
