I did it for both reasons, but not purposely originally.
Actually,
www.delta.com offered the cheapest airfare which also coincidentally yielded the most SkyMiles and Medallion Qualification Miles. I thought to myself that an extra hour or so is certainly worth it, so I did it.
Both flights were quite pleasant, and the flight attendant and I had a sense of humor about it, as I was the only passenger who flew on both the Atlanta-to-Lexington and Lexington-to-Cincinnati segments.
