OK. I thought there was a workaround on the sign up.
From what I understand, I need to have purchased an qualified ticket on BA before I can join EC.
Looks like I am out of luck, unless there is a work around this requirement.
Is there any other way to check for U? I can't get expertflyer to show hidden classes, and the URL that is posted in this thread is down.

Just sign up for Executive Club online on the BA website.
And once you are logged in, you should see an option of "Book with BA miles" and with this you should be able to make dummy bookings to test award availability on different routes.
