I've had a related problem on DL 49 FRA-CVG-LAX. If you are stuck in coach on FRA-CVG it is nice if the domestic CVG-LAX can be upgraded, but if booked FRA-LAX you can't list for the domestic upgrade until you check in. That is one of those routes where I generally shop around the online systems until one lets me ticket it MY way.
