I'd suggest complaining to AA again, trying to get them to bump up their voucher offer beyond $175 and hope for the best.
Suing will cost you more than you could ever hope to recover, and because so little money is at stake here, I doubt anyone would take this on a contingent basis.
They attempted to file a false report, slandered me, made a false claim, and have wrongfully detained me and my items. I'm not a lawyer, but I do know that the employees violated criminal law. Even though I may not get a dime (and may lose money on this), it would be worth it to force AA to do something about the continued problem and abuses that their passengers have suffered. I love AA, but if there isn't a business case for doing so, I doubt they will solve this problem.
