Can't find any related advice, but I suspect this is an FAQ...

Trying to book YOW-SFO for 2 on points. There is a 6 AM YOW departure that arrives at noon via YYZ. The online booking site insists on routing me through Calgary or Vancouver. Or, the late flight out of Toronto. Yet, when I check the individual segments (yow-yyz, yyz-sfo) there IS availability. I am SE and have clicked the "show all availability" button to no avail.

Am I stuck eating the $50 in fees to call, or is there some trick to getting the right flight?
