This is very true. I recently booked two award tickets on short notice (a few weeks out) and had terrific agents on every call. One agent spent nearly an hour with me, trying different routings and dates to find the itinerary that I liked best. She even suggested a stopover in Hawaii which I was happy to accept.
I'm flying DL > Portland, then NW > NRT > PEK. My companion is flying into Shanghai (also on DL award with DL/NW flights), and then we are meeting in NRT on the way back to head to Maui by way of HNL for 5 nights. I'm pretty psyched. At 60k miles, the coach awards to Asia are a great value, especially if you can take advantage of a stopover. Of course, we'll see what my legs say after spending that long in a coach seat....
