As for the sweetener, HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) is used in the US due to cost. Sucrose (regular sugar) is a fed supported crop and thus prices are higher. Go over the border to Canada and sugar costs much less. As for obesity, drink a few Super Big Gulps of either version and you'll be taking in a lot more calories than you are likely to be burning off. Remember that a 32 oz Big Gulp is 400 calories (regardless of sugar type for the most part). 3200-3500 calories "extra" in your diet is an extra pound of weight (each and every week, cumulative).
