I just came back from Seoul a couple of weeks ago. Much to my surprise, I was told the DMZ (North/South border) is just several miles away from the airport. I really wanted to go see the DMZ, but my friend in Seoul was not very interested in seeing it (he gave me the impression that alot of S. Koreans don't really want to visit the border). I wonder if there is a way for someone with an extended layover to arrange a tour from the airport to see the DMZ.
The DMZ isn't so close that a overshooting airplane is going into N. Korean airspace. I'm guessing but its more like ~30 miles away. DMZ tours are a whole day or 1/2 day event and you can't go by yourself. You have to go with a tour operator. The ride is about 1.5 hours from Seoul. Unless you want to work with a tour operator to do a private tour from the airport, you'll have to go into Seoul to pick it up.
