My first suggestion, Brahmin, would be to first call Delta Air Lines using the toll-free telephone number on the back of your SkyMiles card. Ensure that you speak to an agent at the International Awards desk. Inform that agent of your intention of using your SkyMiles for a round-trip award ticket (either coach or premium class) between Los Angeles and Shanghai, and the preferred dates when you intend to fly.

I have found that the Delta Air Lines International SkyMiles Awards agents are quite patient, helpful and informative in assisting one realize one’s ideal international award dream trip. Sometimes they will suggest itineraries of which one would never think, as they have done with me more than once!
