You generally can't upgrade XY tickets (which are free tickets "bought" with miles) with anything. These tickets simply aren't upgradeable, though it looks like exceptions can be made like in my case. On the way from DEN-CUN I asked at the gate and the agent said first was full but that it didn't matter anyway since we were on free tickets.
