I suspect that the reason is simply one of space - it was probably the only place that it could be put, and seems to be linked to the new check-in area and the new lounges which were all basically built at the same time.

Aren't these some of the higher-yielding routes in the network? If so, I would have thought that the pressure to match the experience must have been pretty intense and virtually irresistible.
