I went through two offbrand adapters before getting an official Dell universal AC/auto/air adapter that really works to power and charge the battery. It is bigger and heavier than a targus or igo, but it works.
You are exactly right. I wasn't aware the the inspiron 6000 used the same power as the Lattitude D600. I have a Lattitude D600. I bought my Targus power source back in 2001 when I still had my IBM Thinkpad. Targus will send you the tips complimentary for laptops so I was willing to forgo battery charging. I just make sure I have a full charge before boarding. I also like my targus because I have the tips to charge several other appliances.
