Since no one else has answered this, I'll venture a less then expert reply: the rest of the world is doing UMTS on 2100. In the US a few vendors are offering it on 1900.

I have a question of my own: if I put my T-Mo (US) SIM in an unlocked 2100 UMTS phone, will I get GPRS in Japan? It works in the rest of the (GSM) world, and T-Mo has a data roaming agreement in Japan with Vodafone. Thanks.
