Note that accumulating 100k HH was waaaaay too easy for that to stay the ALON/GLON level forever. I scored two free weeks in Hawaii off of about a dozen short, cheap stays (usually 1-2 nights at Hampton, HGI, or Embassy). 54k in bonuses for each four stays, plus the base & Gold bonuses, plus profile update bonuses every quarter, etc. It was just too cheap and too easy to accumulate massive amounts of points - they had to adjust things a bit.
I'm disappointed that the gravy train couldn't continue forever, but I'm not offended by their decision. They provided a huge amount of notice - people had something like 18 months to complete their 100k award stays.
The bumping up of categories is less impactful across the board, but it just rubs me the wrong way. If the hotel hasn't completed a renovation or something, it's offensive. It's a backhanded way to jam up the frequent guests with little notice. I'm not picking on SPG here - all of the programs do it.
