Thanks for that great link.... as a flyer and as a university instructor teaching maps & mapping, I love it. Just last week we were looking at great circle routes in class. ...

So in June for my SEA to LIM trip I can book
SEA-STL-MIA-LIM and back LIM-MIA-ORD-SEA = 6302 + 5904 = 12,206
instead of the usual SEA-DFW-LIM ... LIM-DFW-SEA = 5016 +5016 = 10,032

Giving me an extra 2000+ miles and only adding a few hours of travel time, while saving a hundred bucks in the process.
