The analogies you are using are not quite appropriate. The OP clearly made made a mistake (assuming he called within 24 hours and neither the original, nor the new departure date was very close) and AC did the right thing by not penalizing him for that mistake.

A more appropriate analogy would be 'Can a FA give out a free drink to someone in Y who had just accidentally spilled his/her drink?' (and the answer is yes).
