My son recently checked his guitar ORD-PHX and back. He removed the strings and wrapped it in bubble wrap and then taped the case. Surprisingly TSA didn't open it on either flight. On the first flight, I watched a luggage handler toss it into the plane despite the "fragile" sticker but there was no harm done.
