Make sure your insurance is paid up.
Twice I have checked bass guitars as baggage. The first time, I got away with a cracked pickup selector switch and a broken pick guard. This was inside a factory hard shell lined case (!)
Second time, stolen. Filed a claim with my homeowner's insurance, less the $250 deductible. The sentimental value - irreplaceable.
Just to be fair, both of the above occured on United - not AA.
