I guess I am not totally surprised. If the dimensions are smaller or the same as a rectangular suitcase of some kind that would fill the bill, I suspect you are OK. I've seen some strange cases and objects checked in... if it is somwhat larger, well... you might have to spend a sawbuck.

i am not so worried about damage- the ATA case could take much more damage than most people's luggage, more worried about the dimensions.
