Is the resale value of a Chevy Classic really all that different from a Ford Taurus? I think we're all in agreement on the Camrys and Avalons - they are not only attractive to renters but also more attractive to buyers.
But in terms of a year-old car with 25,000 miles on it, I always assumed that all of the mid-scale Big Three cars performed about the same.
Plus I would assume that Ford could manufacture one of their own cars at a lower cost than buying the comparable one from GM (even when they buy them in bulk at a slim profit margin for GM). If they can't, well that's a bigger problem for Ford...
But you're right: if the newsies are leaking that Ford is considering selling Hertz, it means the decision has already been made. It's getting sold.
