Working in NYC, I went to the Indian consulate here for my visa. It was like a factory, with huge lines of people dropping off passports and picking them up in the afternoon, same day. They did not request an itinerary, dates of travel, hotel names (I didn't know where I'd be staying) or anything else -- just money ($50)!
Request a multiple-entry visa; it's the same price as single-entry and obviously more useful. I spent 12 hours in Mumbai on my return trip from Nepal and could not have re-enetered India without a multiple-entry visa. The visa is good for 6 months from date of issue, not entry. That's a problem if you request too far ahead (not your problem, I know).
