a truly aborted landing

That doesn't sound nearly as dramatic as 143 on Sunday night... except for the pax getting sick.

On descent to SFO around midnight, the Captain announced the local weather as clear, winds at 10-12, gusts at 25 mph. I thought that sounded normal for the Bay Area.

On approach, just as we passed over the San Mateo Bridge, the plane banked briefly to the left and re-aligned with the runway. I thought it might have been a last-minute change to the left parallel runway (sorry, don't know the numbers for those two runways). Of course, my IFE was out, so no Ch. 9.

We cleared the Bay, were over land, and then over the runway. At literally about 20 feet from the ground (I was looking out the 2D window the whole time) the engines gunned and the plane snapped into a 45-degree climb. That's what I call an aborted landing! My first thought was near collision with something on the ground!

The FO came on about a minute later as the steep climb began to level out, and said that "because of last-second wind gusts" they decided to "go around for another attempt." I have to say that this gave the pax on the right side of the plane a great view of the city and Bay Area on a beautiful night. Anyway, we turned left over the Pacific, went down past Half Moon Bay, left back over the Bay, and landed without incident. Took about another 20+ minutes.

When parked at the gate, the Captain came on the PA and said something like "I hope you were not alarmed... there was nothing wrong with the aircraft... I felt we weren't lined up correctly... a little high... basically I just didn't do it very well." I thought that comment was tremendously brave and honest of the Captain. ^ Really nice guy who came through F after we all had boarded in ORD, shook everyone's hand and introduced himself.
