One of the benefits of Northwest Elite is to get an automatic and immediate first class seat when purchasing a y-class ticket. This may be what happened, (with a $1300 ticket), and would happen to a silver as well. Platinum is nice with available seats, but remember that Northwest ALWAYS holds back tickets from the upgrade pot until day of departure....and I believe that Y-UPS come from that pot, not the available upgrade pot.
