I just visited Rio and had similar "issues" finding reasonable fares around Brazil. Expedia and similar search engines certainly aren't the whole story, though. You should look at Gol airlines (http://www.voegol.com/), I think they have flights from Rio to Buenos Aires around $300 n/s, and there may be better deals on their website, too.
