A car will be of advantage yes, unless you want a Swiss Railpass (This could limit your travels and stops due to schedules, but feasable).
Most hotels have parking spaces available as soon as you leave the large cities like Geneva, Zürich, Basel, Bern and Lausanne, and this at no charge.
