Well, UA is not a charity. It is a business, and we are the customers (or revenue, basically the same thing).

Question -- why would you want to spend 40,000 miles on a $400 fare (only 1 cent/FF mile), especially if you pay an extra 1 cent/mile for 12,000 of them? That nets out to 0.6 cents per miles -- a poor value.

Just buy the ticket and use the 28,000 miles on some other trip that has availability.
