Based on what you're saying, UA would prefer for there to be millions of "Orphaned" miles out there that will NEVER be redeemed, thus saving them money in the long run. This goes back to my argument that we are nothing more than Revenue to them...
I think we would ALL prefer that there be millions of orphaned miles out there that would never be redeemed...I certainly do. The overhang is pretty huge and I want those seats when I need them.
As for your friend's ticket, have you called the awards desk to find routing? they might be able to be more creative and find you a routing with UA or US or whatnot. It'll be worth the fee.
