The double beds *have* all disappeared.. we found the same problem. I'd imagine that some of the more luxurious hotels like the Pulitzer may be more inviting. A Dutch friend of mine used to stay there.
I would recommend the Gresham Memphis Amsterdam. It is located just outside the muesum district and has close access to both the 16 and 2 tram which will take you to all the main attractions. This is a 4 star hotel ( yea I know in Amsterdam 4 stars doesn't hold much weight) and you can get rooms for about 85 euro on Travelocity. They also have real double beds! All in all one of the best deals in the city.
