No-tier members will never gain anything automatically. Once you are Gold (or higher) you gain 4 upgrades for every 10,000 miles posted. ALSO, importantly, unless you have status you cannot use upgrades, except for from a full fare Y or B ticket. (In which case a YUP would be the way to go if you have some cash to spare). Though honestly, IMHO, on the shorter haul MD80 flights, especially with the additional seats, I don't feel that its worth the extra money to fly in first, (unless, of course, you're upgrading for free
) (I'm 6' 2", and I can survive on the back of the bus).
