A very few airlines (like AC) also now offer cheap fare classes (AC calls them "tango" fares) that don't allow you to select a seat in advance.

I don't think LY subscribes to either of those models, however. AFAIK every LY coach pax regardless of fare class has access to the same coach seats on the plane. There may be some discrimination based on Matmid status, but I don't think LY discriminates based on fare class. Perhaps somebody like apirchik with more recent LY experience can elaborate, however.
That's correct seating is only type of restriction you'll get bu that is purley based on Matmid Status. As for fare/bucket tickets, there is no restriction on what seat you get, e.g. Full Y could be seated at the back of the aircraft while Discounted 'L' (basically cargo class) could be front row Y. Something you should be aware of though is this, even if you're confirmed in 'L' class with a pre-assigned seat you could turn up to the airport and find you've been kicked off the flight because some PLAT matmid has decided to purchase a Full Y ticket upto 24hrs before the flight. It's ELAL's rule to confirm Matmid PLAT's a seat on any flight regardeless whether it's full. NB:you would only be kicked off obviously if there were no more seats avail when the PLAT called up for a ticket.
